Project
Brief

Introducing a new interactive art space within TSG physical site, this interactive installation will serve as both a data collector for TSG as well as a bridge of cultural connection. Through the combination of an online APP,remote audience and local audience are organically connected together. Our design's purpose is to foster connections among audiences from different cultural backgrounds through interactive design and promote cultural exchange and diversity in artistic form. This will not only enrich TSG's cultural resources, but also promote communication and understanding between different cultures.

Our
Vision

Since 1969, TSG has been dedicated to the spirit of non-elite artistic practice, promoting diverse art development, and carrying an essential public narrative function. At present, TSG's audience primarily consists of students and faculty studying art-related disciplines at the University of Sydney, as well as local community residents.

Through this new art interactive space, the audience can become more intimately involved in TSG's art discourse, providing artists with fresh artistic inspiration and spreading inclusive and harmonious social values through diverse forms of artistic expression. Simultaneously, this space will attract audiences from different cultural backgrounds, making TSG a hub for fostering cultural diversity and art exchange, providing meaningful cultural interactive experiences to audiences with diverse cultural backgrounds.

In the future, this new art interactive space will further deepen TSG's mission for diverse art development, strengthen the promotion of cultural diversity, and contribute to social harmony and integration. It will also expand the audience base and provide more attractive cultural interactive experiences to maintain its core function as a public art space.

History

Tin Sheds Gallery was established in 1969 as an autonomous informal venue on the University of Sydney campus. It consists of four tin sheds next to the Wentworth Building and is charmingly titled ‘Bottom Shed,' ‘Middle Shed,'‘Long Shed,’ and ‘Top Shed’. (Grace Mitchell, 2022)

Early Drawing is an independent art studio providing a platform for artists, students, activists, and arts-based art groups to display and discuss their work. Since 1989, Tin Sheds Gallery started as a cooperative course at the School of Architecture at the University of Sydney. After two physical location changes, it officially moved its business from 154 City Road to the School of Architecture at the University of Sydney in 2004., Design, and Planning Interior, which is 148 City Road.

Physical
Site

  • Interior spans approximately 223 square meters.

  • Divided into two interconnected spaces with varying heights by two walls.

  • Efficient space management with creative display effects through height variations and visual guidance.

  • Wide white walls create a clean backdrop and ample lighting.

  • Emphasizes artwork without distractions from cluttered elements.

  • Flexible arrangement for exhibition design and curation.

Exterior

Interior

- Due to restricted space, curators must plan meticulously to ensure accessibility and prevent congestion.

- The layout of exhibits must effectively convey the exhibition's theme.

- Creative designs within limited space foster intentional dialogue between works.

- Avoid overcrowding to facilitate viewer focus and comprehension of the exhibition's content and meaning.

+ Suitable for various art forms including painting, sculpture, photography, and installation art.

+ White walls enhance light reflection, contributing to a well-presented display of artworks.

Opportunities  & Limitations

Audience
Engagement

Prioritize engaging with the audience throughout their visit.

1

Incorporate interactive areas or technological equipment to enhance audiences' sense of involvement and create a more immersive experience.

2

Cultural and Social Dynamics

International Conflict

In the present era of globalization, the rapid progress in science and
technology
has expedited the integration of diverse global cultures, resulting in multiculturalism becoming an inseparable aspect of population mobility and social interaction. Simultaneously, within the framework of cultural intermingling on a global scale, disparities and interactions between various cultures have also emerged as a source of numerous conflicts.(Lum & Wagner, 2019). Art, being one of the means of cultural communication, has facilitated peaceful and inclusive exchanges between nations. The role played by TSG as a public gallery holds significant potential to foster awareness among local Australians about global citizenship while promoting
worldwide multicultural exchanges.

Australian Diversity

Multiculturalism plays a vital role in shaping Australia's identity and contributes to fostering an inclusive and egalitarian society across various aspects such as politics, culture, language, and religion. In the context of a predominantly elite-dominated mainstream culture, it becomes particularly significant to examine whether art exhibitions presenting collective narratives tend towards homogeneity within a diverse society. (O'Reilly & Parish, 2015). TSG's non-elite art practice embodies the essence of pluralism and actively challenges the status quo in mainstream art while promoting the advancement of cultural diversity.

Final
Design

Our design uses AI to turn audience-uploaded memories (images, videos, audio) into artworks, encouraging active participation in TSG's exhibitions. Audiences can comment, share thoughts, and provide feedback to curators and artists, enhancing engagement. The uploaded memories align with current exhibition themes, fostering new cultural exchanges and maintaining TSG's role as a public gallery.

By showcasing top-voted artworks and curated feedback, TSG enriches its diverse displays and promotes innovative art practices. This interactive approach transforms art exhibitions into a two-way communication platform, emphasizing audience participation, enhancing educational value, and fostering a dynamic environment of creativity and cultural exchange.

Curved Touch Screen w/ Sound System

The interior of the installation is equipped with a curved touch screen and sound system. In this single-person space, the audience can generate their own artworks through memories and immerse themselves in the artworks of others within the internal space. This design aims to provide audiences with a rich and innovative art experience through immersive visual and auditory experiences.

1

Individual Experience Time

The individual experience duration for the internal interactive installation is 15 minutes. Additionally, the installation will only allow one person to enter and use it at a time. In the last three minutes, the installation will display a rolling caption indicating the remaining experience time. After the three minutes are over, users will be prompted that the experience time has ended and thanked for using it.

2

Participating in Art Creation

Users can edit AI-generated keywords from uploaded images/text/voice memories, select and add relevant artistic styles, and generate artwork related to the exhibition theme. The AI generation default prompt is a 180-degree panoramic image to ensure that the final product fits the curved screen's display effect.

3

Leaving Exhibition Comments

Users can leave relevant comments on the exhibitions currently on display at TSG, as a way to provide feedback on future exhibitions and participating artists.

4

Browsing Archives

Users can choose to explore TSG's past exhibitions and archives.

5

Voting and Comments

The offline installation features a voting interface, and once a sandbox with 30 participants is full, participants can select their top 5 favorite artworks among 30 works. After viewing other's artworks, users can leave their comments, and view others' comments.

6

Artwork Display

Finally, the artwork with the highest number of votes will be printed and displayed outside TSG. The duration of displaying the artwork depends on the length of each exhibition.

Online Interactive Application

The online interaction consists of an APP.

The offline interactive features will be provided to remote audiences through an online APP, ensuring a consistent art experience for those not physically present at TSG.

Reflection

Working on the project to introduce a new interactive art space within TSG's physical site has been a profound and enriching experience. This interactive installation serves as both a data collector for TSG and a cultural bridge, connecting remote and local audiences through an online app. Our goal was to promote cultural exchange and diversity in artistic forms, enriching TSG's cultural resources and enhancing communication between different cultures.

Creating a scalable, future-oriented design prototype posed challenges, especially in ensuring accessibility and facilitating multi-person collaboration. However, by applying speculative design principles and incorporating user-centric features, we achieved an immersive and forward-looking user experience. The design emphasizes cultural exchange and respects user privacy.

Looking ahead, there's a clear trajectory for further development to enhance inclusivity, accessibility, and additional user functionalities. Recognizing these areas for improvement sets a roadmap for future iterations, demonstrating a commitment to evolving with technological advancements and user needs. This project has significantly deepened my understanding of interactive design and its potential to foster cultural connections.
